Michael Whiticker: Water Songs

Abstract

Living in North Queensland - one of Australia's wettest regions - I've become somewhat accustomed to heavy rainfall. Sitting through a torrential downpour recently, I contemplated the life of a single raindrop, deposited on the mountainous hill at the bottom of which we live. A creek splits our yard, and when the hill is taking a sodden beating it sends its load down through our place and away into the drains submerged beneath the road, and eventually to the sea beyond. The watery journey is here accompanied by a virtual flotilla of popular songs, all of which celebrate water in one form or another.
