Attention is focussed on four rockshelter sites, the two Widgingarri shelters on the mainland, the two others on present-day islands. Two of the sites, Koolan Shelter 2 and Widgingarri Shelter 1, have sequences dating from ea. 28,000 bp. Widgingarri Shelter 2 is undated in the lower levels but is presumed to be of a similar order of antiquity. The fourth site, High Cliffy Shelter, dates to the late Holocene, though the island itself has evidence for fleeting occupation earlier, in the immediate posttrans gressive period.Item Open Access 50/50 by 2020: poverty and redistributive politics in post-independence Fiji(Asia Pacific Press, 2007) Chand, SatishThe affirmative action program launched by the Fiji Government in 2002 espoused a '50/50 by 2020' vision; that is, by the year 2020, some 50 per cent of all economic activities would be owned by the indigenous population. The surprising impact of this heavy-handed redistribution of income and wealth from the non-indigenous to the indigenous population has been poverty-raising. One in eight in the population lived in poverty in 1977, the figure had risen to one in four by 1990/91 and one in three by 2002/2003; and on current trends, would reach one in two (that is 50 per cent) by 2020. Such an outcome would be a direct consequence of these redistributive policies. While the politics of redistribution may have been compelling, its economic costs, including the impact on poverty, are devastating. The 2006 military takeover was executed to rid the country of corruption and race-based politics. Achieving these goals may have a bonus in terms of reversing the rise in poverty. Only time will tell.Item Open Access 9 Degrees of Justice: New Perspectives on Violence against Women in India(2013-07) Bhatia, Manjeet; Kawashima, Kumiko; Caulfield, Tanya; Haberkorn, TyrellPublication Metadata only A Certificate in Accordance with the Act(Centre for the Study of the Chinese Southern Diaspora, The Australian National University, 2013) Powe, Brad; Bagnall, Kate; Couchman, SophieThe twenty-eighth of February 2012 was the 150th anniversary of the cut-off date for nearly 13,000 residents of New South Wales to register under the Chinese Immigrants Regulation and Restriction Act of 1861. The author's great-great grandfather ©Apow© (Gwok Ah Poo, also known as George Harper) received a parchment certificate, numbered 1311, on the Tambaroora goldfield. While the National Museum of Australia may have one of these certificates, and the National Archives of Australia holds another two, the vast majority of these durable documents appear to have disappeared. A public request for information on other examples in private hands (published in the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday, 18 February 2012) confirmed the existence of only one more of these potentially informative documents.Publication Open Access A Changing Diaspora: Recent Trends in Migration between China and Australia(Centre for the Study of the Chinese Southern Diaspora, The Australian National University, 2008) Hugo, GraemeThis article analyses the increasing flow of recent Chinese migration to Australia from a demographic perspective. It discusses the changes in scale and composition of the movement to Australia, and also considers the opposite flow. It ends with some comments on the likely implications of evolving migration trends.Publication Metadata only A Chinese Businessman in 1860s French Cochinchina: The Making of Wang Tai (1828-1900)(Centre for the Study of the Chinese Southern Diaspora, The Australian National University, 2021) Cooke, Nola; Tana, Li; Shaofei, YeItem Open Access A Coincidence of Desires: Anthropology, Queer Studies, Indonesia(2008-07) Jackson, Peter; Hartley, BarbaraItem Open Access A Flourishing Yin: Gender in China's Medical History, 960-1665(2002-03) Evans, Harriet; Brewer, CarolynItem Open Access A Forgotten 'Hero': Kawahara Misako and Japan's Informal Imperialism in Mongolia during the Meiji Period(2005-08) Boyd, James; Tipton, EliseItem Open Access A Fragment of a Story: Gerwani and Tapol Experiences(2004-08) Pohlman, Annie; Parker, LynItem Open Access A Girls' Literary and Cultural Studies' Best Friend(2021-12) Aoyama, Tomoko; Mackie, Vera; Welker, James; Soulsby, SamsonItem Open Access A Grief to Bury: Memories of Love, Work & Loss(2013-07) Menon, Krishna; Kawashima, Kumiko; Caulfield, Tanya; Haberkorn, TyrellItem Open Access A History of Chamorro Nurse-Midwives in Guam and a 'Placental Politics' for Indigenous Feminism(2015-03) DeLisle, Christine Taitano; Bascara, Victor; Camacho, Keith L.; DeLoughrey, Elizabeth
